Sodium alginate based aerogels have attracted wide attention due to their unique properties and practicability, and have been applied in modern scientific fields such as electric energy storage, environmental science and material chemistry. The porous structure and excellent physicochemical properties of sodium alginate aerogel provide great potential for its application in different fields. It has remarkable removal effect on heavy metal ions and organic pollutants in wastewater, and provides a good solution for environmental remediation. In addition, the flame retardant properties of sodium alginate aerogel highlight its potential in the development of safe and effective flame retardant materials. The sodium alginate derived carbon aerogel has good application potential in many fields such as supercapacitors and microwave absorption. The purpose of this review is to give a brief overview of the preparation and properties of sodium alginate aerogels and to summarize the latest developments in their popular application areas.
