Zeolites can be modified to hierarchical zeolites, where a secondary porosity (meso or macro pores) is generated to provide an ideal space for the deposition of active phases. This multiparous ZSM-5 and BEA zeolites showed an enhanced accessibility of active sites present in the materials, leading to an improved catalytic activity in reactions involving bulky molecules. A wide variety of innovative synthesis strategies were developed to make a secondary porosity in zeolites. In this mini review, the progress made in the last ten years concerning the synthesis of hierarchically porous BEA and ZSM-5 zeolites and their applications in industrially important reactions are focused. We also discussed the challenges for researchers and scientists for making the hierarchical structured zeolites.
